The Lord of Glory Is Not A Salesman

Set your mind on things above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. – Colossians 3:1-4

For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ…  who set their minds on earthly things.  For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself. – Philippians 3:17-20

Christian, the Lord Jesus Christ will never compete for your attention. His Word, His Cross, His Day, His Supper, His Gathered People, His return, His indwelling Spirit, will not be in the running to amuse you.

His Word preached, His Supper partook of, His local church of ordinary saints gathered — are of another world, another kingdom not of this one. These gifts are for those who’ve died and whose life is hidden with Christ in God. They cannot be altered, dressed up, made less or more as though you are the customer looking to buy a thrill and Christ the salesman needing your business and make a sale.

The world will attempt to squeeze you into its mold (Romans 12) and to a degree the Holy Spirit will allow it in order to test you. Confirmation of your having died and now a citizen of heaven will be seen in your decision to faithfully identify with Christ and His people the way His Spirit and Word has ordained. Shudder to think His ‘well done, good and faithful servant’ will be spoken to those who willingly chose the amusements of this world as though the Christ of glory lost the competition.
